Jeff Gilberthorpe
Well Known Gold Coast artist
Kookaburra – “The last laugh”
Acrylic on Paper
Offered for sale is this excellently rendered painting of a Kookooburra, titled “The Last Laugh”. This is an acrylic (according to information on the back) on paper, which has been mounted on artist’s board. On the back of the original paintings was a handwritten label, identifying the artist and the title.
It’s not hard to find information on Jeff Gilberthorpe, despite him not featuring in any of the standard auction databases. A Google or Yahoo search reveals that he is featured in a Gallery at Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast, where he paints and displays his large painting of buildings suspended under balloons, flying over world landmarks (see www.theiconcollection.com). This painting is obviously from an earlier series when he first came to Australia.
One site gives this brief biography
He was born and spent his childhood England where he held his first exhibition in 1953.
He attended Art College, was married in 1966 and now has three children. A desire to see the world led him into the RAF, where he proved quite a novelty as the only airman who could simultaneously win the near east command singles tennis championships and hold an exhibition of paintings on the same day! The RAF took him to Africa, The Middle East and Cyprus, painting all the way.
Jeff holds a degree in Ceramics and Painting and he has over the years developed his unique style in both mediums. He has held countless exhibitions in different parts of the world.
I’ve been unable to find out prices for his earlier works – even Giclee prints from his gallery sell for $900.00. This painting shows a kookaburra on a branch, and the detail of the feathers and eye of the bird is exceptionally well done. It is signed on the left hand side of the branch. This is on artists paper, and this has been glued on board. It is housed, under glass, in a simple gray frame with gold trim. All we’ve done is pull this part, de-fox the paper, and re-assemble it with the original matte and frame.
I can post this around Australia, securely packed, for $30.00. Alternatively it can be picked up in Brisbane. PayPal is my preferred payment option..
