The over all length of the Sqian Dubh is 7.25 inches, the stainless steel blade measures 3.5 inches in length. HISTORY OF THE SGIAN DUBH: The Sgian Dubh is the small ornamental knife worn in the top of the stocking with the Highland outfit. The flat edge is normally worn in the right hand stocking. The name is Gaelic, the word "sgian", means "knife" or "dagger", the word "dubh", means "black", refering to the colour of the handle, which was made from black hardwood. Originally the Sgian Dubh was worn at the hip, it's history dates back to the early 17th Century. Whereas the dirk was displayed the sgian dubh was a hidden weapon (the words mean "black knife" - said to refer to its sinister purpose). It was also used when the Highlander would disdain the use of his dirk - for utilitarian purposes such as the dispatching game.
