A tribute to Australia's own Champions of the World!
Kostya Tszyu
'Pound for pound…one of the best …'
One of the most feared punchers in world boxing, Konstantin Kostya Tszyu has garnered a reputation as one of the best 'pound for pound' boxers in the world. Born in Siberia, and now a naturalized Australian, the trademark fury of his offence has left many an opponent dazed and confused.
He first attracted attention in Australia when he won a gold medal in the 1991 World Amateur Titles in Sydney. Soon he was teamed with promoter Bill Mordey, and trainer Johnny Lewis for a full tilt at a world title.
After impressive results in the first two years of his pro career, he was given a title shot in only his 14th fight against Jake 'The Snake' Rodriguez in Las Vegas in early 1995. He made no mistake, stopping the Puerto Rican in six rounds to become the new IBF Junior Welterweight champion.
After five successful defenses, he surprisingly lost the crown to Vince Phillips. Unable to get a return, he turned his attention to the WBC Super Light-weight division, and after a series of very polished performances against quality fighters he earned a shot at his 2nd title – and claimed it by pounding Mexican Miguel 'Angel' Gonzalez into submission within 10 rounds.
On February 3, 2001, he joined a very select group of boxers to claim a 3rd World Title by defeating Sharmba Mitchell to claim the WBA title and thereby accomplished step 2 in his 3-point plan of unifying the WBC, WBA, and IBF titles.
A wonderful era recaptured
Given the unique place sport holds in the national psyche, The Boxers will be a continuing source of immense pleasure and pride to you. While the names of these redoubtable world champs are enshrined in the annals of Australia's sporting history, this commemoration ensures that their faces and achievements will live on, long after they are gone, a tangible symbol of a wonderful era in boxing - and Australian sport.
