May Rain at Ara River is an original Japanese woodblock created by the artist, Kawase Hasui. Hasui is one of the most talented and well-known of the Shin Hanga artists. A year before his death he was named a Living National Treasure in Japan. During his career, he made over 600 prints and is known for the incredible landscapes he created from places he visited.  

This gorgeous woodblock features a woman wearing traditional Japanese costume standing on the shore of the Ara River. She is shielding herself from the rain with a beautiful blue umbrella. A man leans out the window of his boat to talk to the woman. In the distance are storm clouds scattered across the sky. While looking at this piece, the viewer can almost hear the sound of the rain falling and splashing in the water. In this piece Hasui demonstrates why he was named a Living National Treasure. Hasui’s prestigious name makes this piece an excellent buy for a serious collector or a great addition to any décor.

May Rain at Ara River is signed within the plate. This original woodblock measures approximately 14.25” by 9.5” on paper that measures approximately 15.5” by 10.5.” This piece is in fine original condition with very slight browning of the paper edges. Please see images for condition.
