Here is your opportunity to buy an authentic hand crafted Didgeridoo.
It is both a beautiful sounding musical instrument as well as an art piece in its own right.
Ken Dickson is an Aboriginal Craftsman from the Dhungutti Tribe in Northern NSW Australia whom I have known for some time. He has been making Didgeridoos for over 15 years.
Ken has created this unique Didgeridoo from Yellow Box timber which has been hollowed out by termites.
It stands 1.5m high and weighs 4.5Kg - Its key is C# / D
The Didgeridoo is believed to be the most ancient woodwind instrument in the world. and Ken continues the tradition of hand crafting them.
This involves traveling to various locations and selecting the timber based on the character of the tree.
He can quite often see the Didgeridoo in the living tree and hear the sound that it will make before starting work on it !
When finding an appropriate tree that has been hollowed out by the termites he cuts it in such a way to ensure that the tree continues to grow.
He then clears it out as best as possible in the forest before bringing it back home to hose out the remaining material and cleaning it properly.
He strips back the bark and adjusts the length according to the required sound and is careful to ensure that the character of the tree is maintained.
He prefers to keep the instrument to look natural rather than decorating it and I think you'll agree that once it is oiled and has bees wax on the mouth piece it looks stunning and has a terrific sound that is made to last.
