Child's Tandem Trailer Bike.  Attaches to the back of any bike frame with a clever flexible coupling that comes with the bike.  Child gets to pedal along behind you and can't fall off - unless you do too of course!  If the kid pedals hard you can even get a bit of a rest...  

Our child gained enormously in confidence and learnt to balance in no time.   In fact, she loved it so much she learnt to ride within a couple of rides - so it's still in "as new" condition.  It's been a fantastic (though rather short term!) investment.
