![]() Title: "KOOKABURRA CHORUS " ARTIST'S STATEMENT Australian backyards are hosts to many amazing native and introduced bird species. I am lucky enough to have a few natives that frequent my yard and neighbourhood. This image is from a series of paintings which explore species observed at or near my home in the Hunter Valley on the eastern coast of Australia. In this image I use a scene that I am very familiar with. About a block from my home in Maitland is the Hunter River. The background of the image shows the short river walk to my local shops. Most of the strolls along the river allow a glimpse of the local bird life, sometimes black cockatoos, water birds and even the odd kookaburra. Kookaburras are known for their eating of snakes and lizards. Something that the long grasses and rocks at this end of the river are known for hiding. The large background spaces & well lit scenery helps the image to take on an unmistakably Australian feel as the classic "Kookaburra sits in the old Gum Tree".Kookaburras are forest kingfishers and are possibly one of Australia’s best known birds. These particular kookaburras are also known as Laughing Jackasses (Scientific Name: Dacelo gigas) because of their unmistakable loud call which is like hysterical human laughter. It is one of the highlights of my day to hear them, their laughter guaranteed to bring a smile to my face as my eyes scan the neighbouring trees to capture a fleeting glance at them. They are a carnivorous bird who are well known for killing snakes. They will tackle snakes up to 2.5 feet long, grabbing them behind the head and beating them to death or dropping them from a height. Since ancient times birds have been regarded as mediators between heaven and earth because of their associations with the sky. They are seen as embodiments of immaterial things, particularly the soul. Wings are often associated with heavenly beings the most obvious is angels. Angels boldly laugh as immortal souls fly. Flapping wings swoop ending the serpents reign. ORIGINAL ARTIST PRINTS
