A shortened (17 1/2 inches) KOTO Katana, signed TADA MITSU. Supposedly a BIZEN smith from the 1550's according to the previous owner. Original length was 22". Nice Hamon, showy. Decent MENUKI, flowers, with a nice wrap. Really interesting FUCHI, subject is Mt. Fuji with the moon coming up behind it. The mountain itself raises above the rim of the fuchi-gane! I have only seen a few of these. The outline on the fuchi is 8 sided which is cool. The Kashira matches with the outside rim different than almost any other Fuchi Kashira. The color is black. The saya is a merchants rig with the large end at the Ko Jiri. Nice cloud design in the lacquer of the saya. The iron TSUBA has a cut out design of some vines and some gold color highlights remain. Overall a nice display piece but has only limited collector appeal.. Why? The hamon runs off at the YOKOTE. Too bad. Still, a pretty piece to hang on the wall. Thanks for looking.
