The Champ Lionel Rose met The King of Rock'n Roll, Elvis Presley during the 1969 defence of his bantamweight title in California. "I was punching a heavy bag in a gym in LA, and I hear a voice sing out, 'Hey, Lionel! What's doin'? And it was Elvis himself," Rose said in an earlier interview. "I was in awe of him, but he said he was in awe of me." A year before a young and wild Rose, the boy raised on a dirt floor in poor-mouth, black-shanty Jackson's Creek took the world bantamweight title off Japan's equally legendary Fighting Harada.
