Another exclusive from Crispin's Creations and Accessories... Leak Geek TM
Reed Leak Sealer
![]() This proven product by Crispin's Creations and Accessories has undergone over 20 years of development,
testing and regular use by it's inventor, a successful professional oboist, teacher and reed maker of 25 years. It is quickly establishing itself in the double reed world as being simply the best product on the market for sealing leaks in oboe and English horn reeds!
Leak Geek™ Oboe Reed Leak Sealer seals leaks in oboe and English horn reeds without fussing with skins, membranes, or tape. Here are just some of Its advantages over these other methods:
The Leak Geek is really easy to use. It is designed to be used in conjunction with the light bulb in the
task lamp on your reed-making desk. The heat from your work lamp's light bulb is used to melt the waxes
in the product, and the surface of the light bulb is used to apply the melted product to the reed. Here's how to use it:

* Occasionally a reed may have a leek way up high, around the heart or tip area. This would normally cause a reed to be relegated to the recycle bin, but the Leak Geek will seal it, provided the leak is not unreasonably large. No other (non-toxic) reed sealing method will even seal a leak that high up on a reed, much less enable you to scrape on the reed without time-consuming fussing with some type of leak-sealing "wrap" around the blades!
At a little over 5 inches in length and 1/2 inch in diameter, a single Leak Geek Reed Leak Sealer is
perhaps a lifetime supply!
Leak Geek is not formulated with the intention that it be applied directly to the
reed without first being melted. Applying the wax directly to the reed without melting
works in most instances, especially as a temporary fix until the product can be applied as intended.
Does not adversely affect light bulb or change the character or color of the light it emits. Non-toxic.
UNSOLICITED TESTIMONIALS FROM DELIGHTED Leak Geek USERS :
"It works!.....Reeds that I had thought were well tied were obviously not air tight and the result of an application of the wax was rather like having your oboe back from a good technician - the sound came to life with a bloom that had not been there before. I was quite astonished as I had been very sceptical. I repeated the experiment with several reeds and found the same result. The great advantage of this waxing is that if say you have inserted a plaque and destroyed the seal, then an application of the heat from the light bulb - which you are probably using as a reed lamp anyway - seals it up again. Another advantage is that after application the reed stays the same in response. It does not need any adjustment to the scrape to compensate for the extra weight and restriction placed upon it by the application of a sealing membrane."
Geoffrey Bridge Honorary Treasurer/Advertising Manager of the British Double Reed Society From his review of Leak Geek which appeared in the November/December issue of Double Reed News, the journal of the British Double Reed Society.
"Hats off to a genius--I am speaking of David Crispin of Jackson, Ms. and "...really it seals up the reed from top to bottom--something fishskin does not do.
The idea is to apply the seal wherever is needed and tonight three reeds I was ready to re-tie are
playing sealed up. Reminds me of my first--expensive--lessons on the oboe ages ago when Charles Kuskin--where is he now--spent two sessions on tying reeds, insisting that they should be so air-tight that no fishskin would be needed. For years I thought his was the ideal solution rather than a realistic approach to reed-maing until the geek arrived. Prediction--the leak geek could eventually substitute fishskin. My fishskin and nailpolish to seal it are still waiting on the reed work-table to be used. Again hats off to David Crispin--who is in the great tradition of American inventors." "The use of Crispin~s leak geek has made me realize that I was cutting too much
from the reed~s heart in order to get it to speak better.Filling up the leaks on the complete left and right side has enabled me to make a reed which speaks well and which still has more heart and wood in it." "Tried leak geak in the orchestra today and the notes which don~t always
respond so easily flowed in Mend. 5th symphony." Harold Emert Rio de Janeiro-Brazil.
"I just received the Leek Geek product from you and have to attest that it "Awesome! I have been telling all my students and colleagues about your product and plan on making it a requirement at my reed camps that I teach. Great idea!" |
