Rare and exquisite Vietnam War Collection Photo's Highway 1. Taken December 1968 -
US Special Forces - Detachment B-22 Set up at Qui Nhon in January of 1965 the US Special Forces Base Camp at Qui Nhon was designated a Command and Control Liaison Base directing combat operations of Indigenous, Mike Force Units throughout Military Region 2 / II Corps Military Tactical Zone. Controlled by the 5th Special Forces Airborne and under direct orders from MACV in Saigon the base camp was joined by a much larger Mike Force detachment out of Vanh Canh (Detachment A-223) as it fought for control of the area during the Tet Offensive of 1968. By March of 1968 over 100 US Special Forces Operatives, directing Recon Teams, Slam Companies and Hatchet Teams operated out of Qui Nhon with particular concentration on the defense of the 1st Cavalry Division Base camp to the west at An Khe and US Units to the south at Song Cau. At it's height the base camp controlled the Mike Force Operations of over 6,000 Indigenous troops operating throughout Military Region 2 (CTZ II). In July of 1969, under constant mortar attack and recon harrassment from Viet Cong Units, the US Special Forces, Detachment B-22 was closed and the MACV-SOG Operatives moved to Chu Lai becoming Detachment B-11, this base camp at Chu Lai was in turn shut down in November 1970.
