Gardiner is an Australian Jesuit commended the task of postulator for the cause of Mary MacKillop, that is, he must compile evidence for the Vatican to decide if she is worthy of canonization. This popular biography of the founder of the Australian Sisters of St. Joseph is a side benefit of his in-depth research. Not your typical long-suffering martyr, MacKillop, whose parents migrated from Scotland before her birth in Australia, had various run-ins with the Roman Catholic authority figures. Gardiner's detail-packed biography dwells upon the people around MacKillop, including family, friends, and colleagues, as well as her work organizing the religious order and educating Australian Catholics.
