Dioon edule, known as the Mexican Cycad or Virgin Palm, is a lovely cycad that is native to Mexico.

The cycad grows to about 3 metres tall under optimal conditions. The trunk may reach 10-30cm in diameter.

It has stiff, upright blue-green to grey-green leaves that resemble futuristic radio antennae. It has 15-20 leaves that are featherlike (pinnate), about 1.8 metres long, and extend radially out from the trunk. The 120-160 leaflets on each leaf are small, linear, leathery and taper to a sharp point.

The edible seeds produced in female cones take more than a year to mature.

Mature and established plants have been reported to tolerate temperatures down to 12ºC) for four days. Dioon edule is one of the most cold hardy cycads.

For sale is a packet of 10 fresh seeds.
