Shoots in the 80s Model Reviewed: 9.5 Stiff Flex Exsar Summary: I've
owned quite a few drivers in the past, usualy buying off ebay due to
reviews I'd read in magazines or online articles. Taylormade R7 425 and
R5 Dual, Ping G5, Nike Sasquatch to name a few. My most recent driver
which I've had for a year is the Cobra LD F Speed in Reg flex and 10.5
degrees. Apart from the awful noise at impact, the Cobra has been my
favourite as it helped cure a bad push with fade into a nice draw. Its
been instrumental in getting my handicap down by a couple of points,
however, recently I'd developed a pull due to the increased
effort/power I was putting into the swing to gain those extra few
yards. So off I went to my local Direct-Golf store here in the UK
specifically to get my swing speed measured, turns out I am now a
constant 95 mph which is just into the stiff shaft bracket. I decided I
may as well buy a new driver and told the sales assistant that money
was no object; all I wanted was long and straight. I then tried the
following drivers, all in a stiff shaft with either 9.5 or 10.5 loft:
Ping rapture,Ping G10 with V2 shaft TM Tour Burner, Titleist 909D2 with
Aldila Voodoo shaft,Adams XTD, Callaway FT9 and the Mizuno MX-700. I
hit a few hundred balls over a couple of hours and discounted the
drivers in the following order. First to go was the Titliest, I could
not stop hooking this visciously with a very low flight. Next was the
Tour Burner. If you can catch this on the sweet spot it goes forever;
any heel or toes and you suffer badly. Both the Pings went next due to
bad hooks and a high flight. I think if I'd have used a mid kick shaft
the hooks would have been worse. The Callaway went next; this had a
lovely mid to high boring flight and was quite good with shot
dispersion. Again though, you'd need a good strike on the sweet spot
(which I believe was bigger than the Tour Burner) everytime to benefit.
If I'm being honest I also had its high price in the back of my mind.
The last to go was the Adams. A great club that I could hit straight or
with a slight draw time after time. Never did i hit a ball to the
right! The only thing it lacked was some decent feedback on the shot.
No matter where I hit it; toe, middle or heel; it all felt the same. So
that leaves me with the Mizuno MX 700. Now I'd never tried Mizuno
drivers ever; I'd used some MX 25 irons which were very good, but never
really heard good things about their drivers. Things have changed! This
driver is stinky long and stinky straight. The ball flight was high but
not ballooning in anyway. It was easily as long as the Callaway FT9,
maybe longer in total distance and definately longer in carry by a long
way. Shot dispersion was amazing with everything landing pretty much
where I aimed. Even after hitting hundres of balls with my arms getting
tired, the club would just not go wrong. Very very forgiving all over
the face too. Mizuno sell this club claiming it has the highest launch
with the lowest spin - its true, it has! So I bought one there and
then; 9.5 loft with a stock Exsar stiff shaft. Finally, for a
comparison and 'old times sake', I hit one ball with my old Cobra and
one with the new Mizuno. Cobra was a 240 yard pull, Mizuno was a 260
yard fairway splitter; Job Done! Customer Service: Direct Golf UK; effing brilliant! Similar Products Used: Ping G5, TM R5 Duel N, R7 425, Cobra LD F Speed, Callaway Big Bertha (2007), Cleveland Launcher Composite | |

Shoots in the 80s Model Reviewed: Mizuno MX700 Summary: I
am a driver ho!!!! - love looking at Clubs, reading reviews and trying
various demo days. I then usually look at Ebay for a good second hand
deal.
At a guess i have had a different driver every month for the best
part of 2 years - having said that, I have been settled of late with a
Snake Eye Viper tour and Voodoo combo.
So, after reading various reviews in magazines, websites and the first review on this forum, I decided to try out the MX700.
After an initial hit at the American Golf Centre AND the next day
at Direct Golf I could see that the was something in their claims of
Higher launch and lower spin.
I got booked into the Mizuno Fitting programme in Surrey and went for a fit yesterday.
My own driver faired well on the statistics but my feeling of it
launching too low (10.6) and too wide a dispersion was borne out in the
Vector Pro LM.
With my own driver clubspeed showing at around the 88-92 mph the
fitter decided on The first MX700 offering was with the Prolaunch Blue
in reg. This showed an improvement immediately to my own club.
Fuji 360 shaft was negative for me as was the Prolaunch red. Then
we tried the bog-standard reg Exsar shaft. The results were amazing.
Club speed up
to a consistent 92, launch angle an average of 14.7 ; carry to 214 (up
18yards on my own club); roll 17.4 (up 5 yards) and spin an average of
2563.
As important to these good positive figures was the dispersion was down to an incredible 2.9 yards..... and my side spin was a +303 against a -574.
So, it was decided that the standard combo was best for me - then
we went onto the range away from the fitting equipment and hit a few
.............. mmmmmmm lovely !
A rainbow trajectory with a soft gentle draw on each and every hit..... a new experience for me.
Now I have to wait until it arrives, together with the equally impressive 3 wood, and take it to the Course.
Mizuno have done a fabulous job with this range and I strongly urge
anyone reading this to at least include this club into the future
demo's. Customer Service: fitting was far better than Titleist's! Similar Products Used: too many to remember. |
