DESCRIPTION:
The latest release from Mouth Of The Architect reaffirms why these guys are one of my favorite bands doing the whole metallic epic rock thing. They've got the crushing doomed out heaviness and bleak atmospherics that tie them to the late-era Neurosis influence that permeates all of the bands that play this sort of stuff, but to stand out in the sea of metallic post-rock bands that's out there, you've got to put yer own twist on the sound, which I think MOTA does well. Where alot of the bands in this realm that I've been listening to lately go for maximum psychedelic heaviness (Minsk, Conifer, A Storm of Light, Tides, Rosetta, etc), Mouth Of The Architect are way catchier and more melodic, even sounding like a superheavy metallic indie rock at times - just check out "Generation Of Ghosts", the stunning fifth track on Quietly that brings together ferocious hardcore roars and Julie Christmas (Battle Of Mice/Mouth Of The Architect) contributing her cooing vocals - it's a slab of massive metallic dreampop with majestic riffage roiling under a grey sky streaked by melancholy melodic guitar lines and a central hook that you wont be able to shake easily. So great. There's plenty of crush on here too, lots of massive sludgy riffs and thunderous waves of tribal drums and ultra heavy doom metal, going from rolling stormclouds and winding post rock melodies into devestating downtuned riffage that suck everything in with their massive gravitational pull and howling vocals lumbering and crashing across the overcast, autumnal world of MOTA's music. Spacey psychedelia, pulsating krautrock grooves, ultraheavy math rock workouts, luminous lead guitars rising in endless spirals, the soft piano interludes of "Medicine" and "Piano Boxes", haunting samples from movies like Network, glimmering electronics and blissed out drones all appear throughout MOTA's music. The song "Hate And Heartache" reminds me of Rosetta a little with it's dreamy mix of crushing Neurosis dirge and the bluesy psych guitar soloing of 80s-era Pink Floyd, and "Guilt And The Like" stands out with a waltzing, French cabaret feel that blossoms into slurred, angular sludge. So great! And an aside: can anyone tell me if MOTA took their name from Soavi's La Chiesa?
Packaged in a gatefold jacket that comes with a booklet.
