You are bidding on a complete PowerMac G5 / Xserve Raid (Dual Fibre Channel) / CineWave RT Pro HD 4.7 High Definition Editing System.  Just add monitors!

This is a professional Final Cut Pro / Studio 2 editing system costing in excess of $30K on purchase at the start of 2005 (with upgrades since). 

It is in superb condition and has operated in a smoke-free, air-conditioned suite all its life (see pictures).  It would make a perfect online Final Cut editing system for a production studio or a 10-bit uncompressed compositing / grading system because of the Xserve data throughput and the CineWave realtime effects and HD / SD-SDI outputs.

The system consists of:

PowerMac G5

• Dual 2.5 GHz (64-bit, 1.25 GHz Bus) 
• 4.5 GB Ram

When system was upgraded in 2007, it was configured for dual boot into either 10.4 Tiger or 10.5 Leopard with CineWave / Xserve RAID installed under both OS.

Original OS disks 10.3, 10.4, 10.5 and Hardware Test disks are included - so system can be set up from scratch again if required.

We have configured the Xserve unit to operate under RAID-50 (Dual channel speed with RAID-5 data redundancy and a spare hot-swappable drive) to provide 1.5 TB of secure storage with a sustained 300 MB / sec data transfer - perfect for multi-layer HD / SD editing in Final Cut Studio 2.

If absolute speed is not required, the Xserve can be easily swapped back to single channel RAID-5 to give 2.4 TB redundant storage and around 130 MB / sec data sustained transfer rates.  Alternatively, the other channel can be populated with another 7 x 750 GB drives to offer 4.5 TB more storage  – The Xserve is a versatile beast!

CineWave RT Pro HD 4.7

• Targa Cine Engine 10-bit 4:2:2 card
• CineWave 10-bit HD-SDI Breakout Box and cable with 4-channel embedded 20-bit/48KHz audio (see picture)
• CineWave 10-bit Pro Digital and Analogue SD-SDI / Component Breakout Box and cable (see pictures for all audio and video connections)
• Full genlock / black burst reference inputs on rear of Pro Digital and Analogue BOB.

For those unfamiliar with the CineWave series - once video has been captured into one of CineWave’s 8-bit, 10-bit or 16-bit uncompressed codecs, you gain realtime hardware processing from the card for Final Cut effects such as 3-Way colour correction, Chroma Key, Scale and Motion, on up to 5 realtime tracks (3 Video and 2 Graphics with Alpha channel)

It also inputs / outputs all SD and most HD video formats through the breakout boxes to the Final Cut timeline via HD / SD-SDI, Component etc.  Multi-layer playback on non-CineWave codecs may still need rendering as per normal Final Cut / data and bus transfer trade-offs, but the Xserve RAID alone offers significant realtime improvements to all Final Cut operations over systems operating off NAS arrays etc.

All CineWave boxed software and manuals from version 3 to 4.7 RT Pro are included.

Please Note:

A full Final Cut Studio 2 is installed and configured to demonstrate the system, however the original software package is not included in the sale, and further use of the installed version is strictly the buyer’s responsibility.

CineWave RT Pro 4.7 represents the final release and support for CineWave RT Pro series, as AVID discontinued this outstanding product when they absorbed Pinnacle (you can guess why…).  I see little reason why it can’t also be configured to work with the new Final Cut Studio 3, but this has not been tested and cannot be guaranteed.

I will consider selling the Mac G5 / CineWave RT Pro HD as one system, and the Xserve RAID and 2Gb Fibre Channel card and cables as another, since they can operate independently – please email me to discuss prices.

The original packaging for the Mac G5 and Xserve RAID is included, and courier delivery (including full insurance) for three heavy boxes would be somewhere around $150-300 depending on your location.

Local inspection and collection in Canberra is also available. 

Delivery and installation to the Sydney metro is an option, and the winning bidder can discuss this with me if they don’t feel confident installing the system in their suite.
