![]() Title: "Magpies" (Species: Gymnorhina tibicen) ARTIST'S STATEMENT Australian backyards are hosts to many amazing native and introduced bird species. I am lucky enough to have a few natives that frequent my yard and neighbourhood. This image is from a series of paintings which explores species observed at or near my home in the Hunter Valley on the eastern coast of Australia. Unlike many bird illustrations the characters portrayed in these paintings have been presented within a scene. Adding to the personal nature of the image and to its story telling capabilities, the viewer is invited to become a non-intrusive part of the birds environment. Australian Magpies are well known for their musical warbling call of extraordinary beauty. The Australian Magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen) is also known as the Flute Bird, which refers to its flute-like song. This is often performed by couples or groups of magpies. The strongest memories I have from childhood are the early morning sounds of magpies when we were on holidays at the lake, I did not know the origin of the musical calls until later in life. Now as an adult I still associate the sounds with salt water, caravans and boating. Now, 30 years later I have a family of magpies that dwell in the tree behind our house. They come to our back yard for a feed, hopping around in the grass in search of tasty insects. The adult birds have pure black and white plumage while juveniles tend to have speckles of grey.
ORIGINAL ARTIST PRINTS
Printed on high quality 240gm 100% cotton, acid-free, archival, fine art paper. A3 size (29.7 x 42cm). These prints are the artwork's original physical form, NOT reproductions.
