Jackson Fortune and his older sister, eleven year old Tracey, always do everything together, Tracey leading while Jackson follows behind, tapping out imaginary drum rhythms.  Then Jackson receives the first of a series of secret messages, and he begins to wonder what it would be like to have some friends of his own.  Maybe it is time for him to break away from Tracey - from his tall, tough, adventurous big sister, who is so unlike other girls that no-one could even imagine that she might like to be a bridesmaid at a forthcoming family wedding.

But the messages to Jackson are not the only mystery.  Who is the stranger on a motorbike seen hanging around outside their cousin Tessa's house?  And why does Tracey suddenly decide she wants to wear a dress?  As Jackson takes his first steps away from Tracey, only to discover the he couldn't wish for a better big sister, there are more than a few surprises in store for the Fortune family!
