Marshalls Cement (glue) Advertising plate Shop Display c1890- UNITED- WITH MARSHALLS GIANT CEMENT
Please see all postage rates in description below.
It wasnt until I read the phrasing on the plate- and then the shop card suspended underneath- that it all clicked. This is in fact an amazing piece of store advertising merchandise. The plate is DELIBERATLY broken, and was then UNITED
WITH MARSHALLS GIANT CEMENT ! The shop card below boasts that the cement (clearly a type of glue) will repair wood, leather, glass, china, pipes, ivory, billiard cues, Marble, Jet Jewellery &c. The plate and its phrase in fact makes NO sense at all if it were NOT broken!. Now that said this plate does look to me as if the cement has failed at some point- as the plate is currently stuck rather ad hoc, not at all cleanly- and is even slightly skewed in its pieces? In any case you get the idea- and this must be one of the most unique Victorian advertising items I've handled? Two holes pierce the plate through which a rope is tied with some fine Victorian Sailors handiwork style plaiting which may have been added later? The original ropes are intact and made of natural jute I think. The card below repeats to each side- so its likely this was suspended in mid air to be read each way. There's traces of a paper label to back of plate which is now almost all lost. I can imagine this display hanging from the rafters in a general store as an advertising promotion, a very clever gimmick and one rare piece. I've handled many Marshalls Giant cement bottles in my time- It came in a small shear top rectangular shaped bottle- often called a Gum bottle, and I collected alongside my ink bottle collection as a related go with
