It can't be known whether the very first stone axes were intended as tools or for offensive purposes, but it is certain that the axe was one of humanity's first ever weapons, along with the spear. Its military use continues to this day: US Marines carry a standard issue hatchet both as a utility tool and as a close quarters weapon! Axes have been such an important factor in the history arms and early warfare, that no edged weapons collector can overlook them.    

This Nordic Axe is designed as a sharp single-handed weapon and is based upon surviving examples of early medieval axe heads. Its fairly light weight makes it easy to use as a hand weapon and also makes it easy to throw. Thus far, my personal Nordic Axe has proven to be accurate at short to medium ranges. Long range accuracy is, I suspect, more limited by my ability than any property of the axe! I also chop wood with it too! Functionally, it feels and performs like a camp axe in this application. The edge will hold well. Due to its size and weight, the Nordic Axe is not a weapon I can envision sundering a shield, but does concentrate quite a bit of punch. For autheticity sake, it lacks the awful glossy black head and curving wide silver blade band, that make other similar reproduction axes look like modern shed tools; instead, its surface is wonderfully gnarled and pitted, making it look as if it was forged in Scandinavia a thousand years ago.
