The Minolta SRT 101 is one of the classic 35mm single lens reflex cameras of the 60’s and 70’s and one of the best looking.
Introduced in 1966, it was the first SLR to offer through the lens metering at full aperture. This means that the meter reading in the viewfinder is always as clear and bright as the scene being photographed. The camera also introduced what was essentially the world’s first matrix metering system, known as CLC or “Contrast Light Compensator” which relies on two CdS cells in the pentaprism to take account of high contrast scenes.
A whole new series of meter coupled (MC) Rokkor lenses were introduced at the same time as the camera to take advantage of its capabilities.
Besides its good looks the SRT 101 is a rugged, dependable performer, weighing in at 980gm when fitted with a standard 58mm MC Rokkor lens.
This particular camera is a “black (shutter speed) dial” version, S/N 1415981 which puts its date of manufacture around 1968-69. (In 1969 the shutter speed dial was changed to a silver component). It is fitted with a fast 58mm MC-Rokkor PF lens 1:1.4 lens.
The camera and lens are in excellent cosmetic and mechanical condition. All the shutter speeds sound right, the aperture blades are snappy with no oil on the blades, focussing is smooth and there are no tears or wrinkles in the cloth focal plane shutter. The self timer, depth of field preview and mirror lock-up all work. The light meter responds consistently to changes in lighting and the ASA setting. (I cannot, however, attest to the accuracy of the shutter speeds or meter readings).
The only niggles I can find with the camera are a few dust spots in the lens and on the mirror (none of which will affect picture quality); a bit of paint loss on the underside of the lens barrel and some small chips in the black trim paint on the back. Nonetheless, this is a forty year old camera and is sold “as is”. It will make an excellent addition to your classic camera collection but if it is to be used actively to take pictures it will no doubt benefit from a “CLA” – clean, lubricate and adjust from a qualified camera technician.
The original Minolta case and strap are included but the stud on the back has torn off. The case has been repaired by adding two more studs and is quite functional but not of the same cosmetic quality as the camera. No lens cap is included.
