Mountain Blue Berry, Purple Apple Berry
Billardiera longiflora
This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List
This perennial evergreen vine is an attractive, slender, twining plant with lance-shaped leaves arranged alternately. It comes from the cool rainforests of south-eastern Australian and Tasmania. Preferring a rich, well-drained, lime free soil in sun or part shade with something to climb on. It does not like temperatures below zero degrees C, strong winds or drought.
It flowers for a very long time during Spring and Summer producing individual, creamy green, pendulous, waxy, tubular to bell-shaped flowers that are tinged with purple and age to pink. In Autumn, very pretty, grape size, edible berries of the deepest violet appear. These berries are the bush food of the Australian Aborigine.
