Grow Your Own Mushrooms – It’s Easy & Fun!
Swiss Brown (portabello) Mushroom Kit
You can grow your own fresh mushrooms using this kit. Each kit contains:
- Easy to read instructions
- Mushroom compost, already impregnated with mushroom spawn
- A casing (or ‘topping’) layer of peat moss
Dimensions of kit:
- A box - 37cm long x 26cm wide x 17cm depth
Weight:
- Around 6.5kg. These kits are very generously filled, which makes postage a little more, but we believe you will achieve a better result from the generous filling.
Postage
- Will vary by state and location.
How does it work?
There are clear instructions contained in the kit.
However, to give a brief overview, when you receive the kit you need to crumble the supplied casing layer of peat moss over the mushroom compost (the compost will look white and furry – this is the mushroom spawn).
Keep the kit closed, then after one week open up your kit (discard the lid) so it is exposed to the air.
Water once a day with a spray bottle (keep moist, but not damp and soggy) and mushrooms will start to appear in another 1 – 2 weeks. Twist them out and eat!
More crops of mushrooms will appear after this – approximately 2 weeks apart.
Questions & Answers:
Do I need to keep the kit inside or outside?
Inside is best, as temperatures need to be kept between ideally between 16 and 20 degrees if possible (lower temperatures, eg: 12 degrees is OK, your kit will just take longer).
Do I need to keep the kit in a dark place?
Not really. But keep away from direct sunlight, heaters and breezy areas, or your kit will dry out.
Where should I keep the kit?
Some suggestions: bottom shelf of a pantry, the cupboard under the sink, a laundry or room you don’t use much, a cupboard out of the way or just sitting on a bench. Some people put them under the bed! Just remember, you need to water it once a day once it is opened up, so make it accessible.
How long will the kit crop for?
It should crop for 2 – 3 months, however some people have reported longer. Your first 3 crops will generally be the heaviest, with later crops getting smaller. Crops are around 2 weeks apart.
How many mushrooms will I get?
This depends on how well you look after your kit – we generally say up to 2 kg.
How big are the mushrooms?
You can pick them at any size you like. With the early crops, you might like to pick them when they are smaller or else they will crowd other mushrooms out.
How damp do I need to keep the kit?
Moist, but not damp and soggy.
Do I need to start my kit as soon as I receive it?
This is generally recommended, as the kits are time sensitive. However, waiting another week will not hurt it – but don’t wait a month or more!
Can I use the compost on the garden when the kit is finished?
Of course. Many plants love it (some don’t – check you gardening books).
Can I arrange pick up rather than post?
Yes - you can pick up the kit from us at some of Melbourne's North Eastern markets (Greensborough, Bundoora, St Andrews, Nunawading). Please send us a message for locations.
