The tree upon which it grows has glossy green leaves and towers to a height of 100 feet in a pyramidical shape. When the tree is in bloom, covered with thousands of golden fragrant blossoms, it is said to be a sight of rare and exquisite beauty. The people of India hold the tree in such high esteem that it was often planted near temples and ashrams where its colour, form and fragrance could be enjoyed by people coming into those refined environments.  A perfume is also made from the delicate blossoms that is said to have notes of orange-flower, ylang-ylang, and tea rose.

About Nag Champa...

Nag Champa is probably the best selling incense on the planet! The original blue pack, made with this distinctive fragrance, was made famous by the patronage of Satya Sai Baba.

"Nag Champa" is a perfume originally manufactured in the Hindu and Buddhist monasteries of India and Nepal. It is traditionally made from a sandalwood base, to which are added a variety of flower oils - including that from the flower of the Champac tree.

Each monastery has its own secret formula which is revealed to no-one outside the order! The sacred tree belongs to the magnolia family and grows to about 30 metres in height. Its flower is yellow and star shaped, and as well as being the source of the perfume, also gives a yellow dye. Frequently planted in temple grounds, the wood is used for making sacred images, drums etc.

Nag Champa is a unique floral fragrance with musky overtones.

Mother mine, to the wild forest I am going,
Where upon the champa boughs the champa buds are blowing;
To the ksil-haunted river-isles where lotus lilies glisten,

Naga worship: Naga Chauthi or Naga Panchami

On the fifth day of the bright half of Shravan month of Hindu calendar, people worship the snake or nag. The day is known as Nag Panchami. Nag Panchami has a special significance and is celebrated by the devotees with lots of faith, fear and devotion. It is firmly believed that the serpent lord associated with Lord Subrmanya, who will be pleased by this worship, will mitigate their sufferings and bring happiness. On this day, people visit temples specially dedicated to snakes and worship them.

In Jainism and Buddhism snake is regarded as sacred having divine qualities. It is believed that a cobra snake saved the life of Buddha and another protected the Jain Muni Parshwanath. Today as an evidence of this belief, we find a huge serpent carved above the head of the statue of Muni Parshwanath.

In South India, the serpent is given a pride of place and you will find Naga idols installed in almost all temples and even on roadside platforms. It is believed that any harm done to snakes create miseries and sufferings. Serpent worship is very widely followed. The major Hindu gods are associated with snake - Lord Shiva has serpent as an ornament round his neck and Lord Vishnu has serpent Adhisesha as his bed and he is called Seshashayana (person sleeping on snake)
