NEGOTIATED EVALUATION

Helen Woodward

Primary English Teaching Association

NEGOTIATED EVALUATION: Involving Children and Parents in the Process. Helen Woodward. This volume provides a wealth of practical suggestions for implementing authentic assessment. Woodward, a senior lecturer at the University of Western Sydney in Australia, makes a strong case for including children and parents in the assessment process, which she labels "negotiated evaluation."

The introduction and first chapter provide a clear outline of the author's beliefs and assumptions. While acknowledging different usages for the terms "assessment" and "evaluation," Woodward chooses the term "evaluation" to encompass both. She defines evaluation as "the collection and analysis of data, from a variety of sources and perspectives, which will contribute to: making judgments of merit and worth, making decisions about future planning, and informing learning." Throughout the book, she convincingly argues that the classroom teacher's role in assessment goes beyond issues of accountability to those of responsibility. Chapters 3 through 5 are devoted to the roles of teachers, parents and children, while an additional chapter focuses on the interpretation of evaluation data. These chapters contain specific and practical suggestions. Models of parent observation profiles and parent and child portfolio response sheets, with suggestions for their use, are included, for example. The book closes with a case study and epilogue that set the stage for implementation.

Woodward draws upon her classroom experiences, as well as extensive research and consultation with teachers in Australia, Canada and the United States. A weakness of the text may be its emphasis on literacy evaluation; most of the strategies, however, can be easily applied to other curricular areas. For both beginning teachers and experienced professionals, Negotiated Evaluation is likely to be a valuable resource.
