Q. What is Dual Layer?
A.The Double/Dual Layer DVD±R DL system uses two thin embedded organic dye films for data storage separated by a spacer layer (see figure). Heating with a focused laser beam irreversibly modifies the physical and chemical structure of each layer such that the modified areas have different optical properties to those of their unmodified surroundings. This causes a variation in reflectivity as the disc rotates to provide a read-out signal as with commercially pressed read-only discs. Did you get all that?? It just means that there are two recording layers inside the DVD instead of just one... two layers means twice the recording capacity! Now wasn't that easier?
Q.How do they compare to other market leading drives?
A. They simply are the best we could find. These are the same mechanism Apple uses in their new line up of MacPro's.
This drive is 100% compatible with your PowerMac G3 (blue and white tower), G4 or G5, eMac G4 or iMac G4, Intel Mac Pro running Mac OS 10.2, 10.3, 10.4. and 10.5 (OS 10.2, 10.3 requires an installation of drivers).
A. With the dual layer capability (8.5GB), This burner is ideal for burning high capacity DVD movies. It's also superb for storing large iTunes collection or family photograph libraries in iPhoto. These drives are also amazing for back up purposes.
