Egyptology

Search for the Tomb of Osiris

Illustrated by Ms. Joanna Sutherland

Large Hardcover

c2004, Published by The Five Mile Press

NEW!!! This is a new book but there are small surface scratches on the back from shelf ware.

Publishers Note: This is the facsimile of a journal supposedly written in 1926. As there is scant evidence to back up this claim, it must be enjoyed solely on its own merits

"The pyramids reminded me of all i came to Egypt to discover - the dusty tombs, the ornate temples, the golden treasures, and the strange, unearthly mummies. But i have also come to find something more."

- Emily Sands, 1926

Dear Sir,   Further to our telephone conversation, please find enclosed with this letter the Egyptian book we discussed. As i mentioned, it is the journal of my great aunt, Miss Emily Sands, who was a keen amateur Egyptologist. I think you will agree that it has a unique and unusual history.

In 1926, four years after the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun, a group of Egyptologist led by my great aunt set out across Egypt armed with a papyrus text of almost unimaginable antiquity. This papyrus had been brought to England some time in the early 18th century, and then found its way into the possession of the Farncombe family. I remember reading somewhere that there was speculation that this precious manuscript described the actual location of the lost tomb of Osiris - that in fact, the whole legend of the god Osiris, his enmity with his brother Set, his eventual murder and his secret burial by his wife, Isis, were perhaps folk memories of a real king of Egypt who lived during the earliest period of Egypt's civilization. The reason for this speculation was that the image on the papyrus showed Isis granting eternal life to her husband in a most unusual fashion on one side, while mentioning that Osiris was "in the holy mound" on the other. This "holy mound" has on occasion been associated with the island of Biga near Aswan.

It appears that my great aunt, being a good friend of the then Lady Farncombe, was shown the text whereupon she persuaded her friend to mount an expedition to seek out the lost tomb. The expedition went aheas in Novenmber 1926 but, after several progress reports, my great aunt and her companions vanished into the desert, never to be heard of again.

I had almost forgottne the stories of my great aunt and her strange disappearance until May 1994, when i received a packet of papers and notebooks that had been forwarded from Patsy's Hotel in Cairo. Apparently they had arrived by post from Aswan, and then lain forgotten in a store-room for nearly eighty years! I was shocked to see that the papers were in my great aunts handwritting. It was assumed that she had been attacked by bandits, or had perhaps gone for an ill-advised swim in the crocodile-infested Nile, but i had always found these rumours difficult to believe. The official police inquiry at the time revealed few clues, and a series of private investigators hired by Lady Farncombe failed to she further light on the matter.

As i read through my great aunts journal, i became more and more convinced that she has indeed discovered something of tremendous importance. There were certainly rumours in the papers at the time to that effect, and some so-called mystics even claimed that she had dies as the result of a "mummy's curse", very similar to the one that was said to have killed some of the discoverers of Tutankhamun's tomb. But while it was true that my great aunt's pet cat Hathor-Re did suddenly die far away in England, at about the same time as her disapperance, coincidences like this happen all the time, so i thought nothing more of it, especially as Hathor-Re was 18 years old.

I have since pondered the manuscript on many occasions hoping it might shed some light on what happened to my great aunt. But since moving to America to be closer to my daughters, i have had less time on my hands. I therefore offer it to you for publication, in the hope that perhaps it will reach someone who may be able to  investigate my great aunt's disappearance. At the very least, a facsimile of the book might make a fascinating read, as i am aware that much of the journal is somewhat at variance with accepted theories about the early history of Egypt.

If you are not interested in publishing the journal, please take the trouble to return it to me.

Yours faithfully,

Joanna Sutherland
