Jack McCarthy may know New Guinea better than anyone now alive. He has worked there for thirty years. Out of his knowledge and experience, he has written a book holding little comfort for Australians.

"We will fight anyone who tries to take our land! They can kill us! We will die!" the natives of Bouganville Island told him. Their words were typical of the fear and resentment felt by many in Papua and New Guinea.

John Desmond (Jack) McCarthy was born at Cahirciveen, County Kerry, Ireland, in 1911. He was educated at the Windsor Military Academy and at London University, where he received a Diploma in Economics. He spent four years as a merchant seaman, visited Russia three times, lived in France on several occasions, was a 'cub reporter' in the USA and has fought in the Kokoda, Milne Bay, and Natzab campaigns. His journalistic work in the Territory of Papua and New Guinea won him the Walkely Award for Journalism in 1969.

Condition - In good > very good condition - minor creases to the cover - some age mellowing to the text and minor warping of the book - binding is firm. A greeting has been written on the first text page.
