Did you sometimes wonder why pictures of professional photographers look so much more brilliant than yours?

One reason is probably that professional photographers always use specific lens hoods with an appropriate design for each lens.

A lens hood prevents nonimageforming stray light from coming into the lens at extreme angles and being deflected to the film or sensor inside the lens. Everybody knows the ‘flare’ spots caused by strong light sources even with the best lenses. Less know is the ‘veiling glare’ which is spread out over a large area resulting in a whitish haze that covers the entire image, or large parts of it. Thus the contrast and the color saturation of the image is often strongly reduced. Even the slightest haze deprives the lens from its brilliance. Veiling glare is the most detrimental form of flare.

?Like in most technology fields, producers did not yet agree upon a standard connection system for mounting accessories to the front end of lenses.

?Generally producers are not really interested in compatible mounting systems to avoid that people use low-price accessories of competitors.

?After achieving that the customer bought their camera and lens, producers want to bind him by making sure, that only their own overpriced accessories can be used on the front end of their lenses.

Mennon SP & DC series lens hood

?The lens hoods of the SP (“Super Performance”) and DC series have the so-called tulip-style design. The advantage of this flower shape design is , that it offers the same prevention of flare as the corresponding circular or rectangular design, but with a smaller size and a lighter weight.
?The higher sides of tulip-style hoods must always remain in a perpendicular position. That is why they may only be used on IF (Internal Focusing) camera lenses, cause the mounting device on IF lenses does not turn during focusing.
