During WWII, the M13/40 was developed based on M11/39 tank and it could be refered to as the first modern tank of the Italian Army. It used the same frame, rivited hull construction and leaf-spring suspension system of the M11/39, and it was given a new 47mm gun on the turret. It was powered by a water-cooled V8 diesel engine which produced 125hp and had a top speed of 31km/h. The production of M13/40 started in July 1940, with approximately 2,000 units manufactured including remodeled versions.
