(Please note that any colour variations shown in the pictures are down to shadows and my poor photography skills, unless otherwise stated.  Gradings are my own and are subjective - please look at the images displayed and make your own mind up - I do tend to err on the side of caution and downgrade.  Pictures may show both front and reverse of item, but only notes as detailed above are being offered in this auction)

Own a piece of history, while you still can...

Just imagine living in a place where the purchasing power of your monthly salary is more than halving as each month passes... where a small pack of locally-produced coffee beans now costs billions of Zimbabwe dollars - a decade ago, that sum would have bought hundreds of new cars... where you can't calculate your wages because the calculator you've always used has no space for the digits needed... and where people spend their wages as soon as they receive them, knowing that tomorrow the ever-spiralling prices will be rising again and eroding their wealth.

Worse still, imagine having what little savings you'd managed to put by being eaten up by ravenous inflation as you sleep.  Sure, your bank might be paying you interest rates into 5 figures a year or more, but while the government quotes inflation at 2,200,000% you know that the real rate is closer to a jaw-dropping 10-20,000,000%.  The Zimbabwean Dollar has depreciated by a massive amount since the central bank floated the currency on 5th May, and with unemployment running at 80% the people are suffering immensely.

The goverment has issued higher value Agro-Cheques for use in the agriculture industry, which has been all but decimated since President Mugabe forced over 4,000 white Zimbabwean farm owners to give up their land to the indigenous people - but as they have no money for equipment, fertiliser and seeds, and zero backing from the corrupt government, the farms are now in deep decline.  It is now widely reported that Agro-Cheques are being used by the general population.

The lower denomination notes are already becoming extremely difficult to find, particularly in uncirculated condition.  If inflation continues at the current pace, as it is widely expected to do, the current crop of higher-value cheques will become scarcer still - and with the recent issue of the $100bn note these will become scarcer still.  Under the iron-fist of the Zimbabwean government, citizens are only allowed to withdraw $100bn a day from their own bank accounts, which makes these notes all the harder to come by.  Taking Zimbabwe dollars out of the country is punishable by imprisonment, so I'm sure you can appreciate the risks involved in bringing these items to you.

And yet even more trouble is coming... until recently the German company Giesecke and Devrient GmbH was printing around half of Zimbabwe's currency, and supplying all of its paper for Mugabe's presses to run 24 hours a day churning out yet more worthless notes.  But, under pressure from the German goverment (and reportedly not being paid for its deliveries), they stopped supplying Zimbabwe on 2nd July 2008.  As announced by the RBZ (Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe) governor Dr. G. Gono at the end of last year, the government is ready to re-issue notes yet again with even more zeroes lopped off - and they have new plates ready for printing the new notes - but without the German company's help, they can't possibly print enough in the timescales required to supply the population and help curb inflation.  It's unlikely in the current climate that any other company will step in to help, so essentially this can only end in tears - the total collapse of the Zimbabwean economy is possibly the only thing that can force President Mugabe out of office at long last.

With a population of only 12 million and the economic problems they are facing, these bank notes are already somewhat scarce and will become scarcer still - what collector can afford to miss out on having these uncirculated notes take pride of place in their collection?

So why buy from me?

  • I am a trusted UK Ebay powerseller, and purchase my notes from reputable sources.
  • I have a 100% feedback rating, gained from over 6 years trading on Ebay.
  • All my stock is in-hand, so you won't need to wait several weeks for the African postal service to deliver your purchase - for UK purchasers this item will normally be with you within 2 working days of payment.
  • I own a 'bricks & mortar' business, trading in currencies and precious metals amongst other things - you are more than welcome to pay us a visit to inspect & collect your purchases.
  • I am totally honest in my descriptions - if a note is not *100%* uncirculated I will say so gladly - do you think all sellers here work in the same way?
  • Your purchase helps out real Zimbabweans in real need! (see below)

A large portion of the proceeds of these auctions goes directly to local workers in Zimbabwe, and is paid to them in US dollars!  Okay, the USD is not quite as strong as it used to be, but it's easier to use in Zimbabwe than the stronger Euro.  Every purchase you make helps out a grateful family in dire need.

Banknote Grading Guide   ~ definition of terms ~

UNCIRCULATED: UNC  A perfectly preserved note, never mishandled by the issuing authority, a bank teller, the public or a collector.  Paper is clean and firm, without discoloration.  Corners are sharp and square, without any evidence of rounding, folding or bending.  No light handling is present, no compromise, a perfect note.  An uncirculated note will have its original, natural sheen.

NOTE: Some note issues are most often available with slight evidence of very light counting folds which do not "break" the paper.  Also French-printed notes usually have a slight ripple in the paper.   Many collectors and dealers refer to such notes as AU-UNC.

ABOUT UNCIRCULATED: AU  A virtually perfect note, with some minor handling.  May show very slight evidence of bank counting folds at a corner or one light fold through the center, but not both.  An AU note can not be creased, a crease being a hard fold which has usually "broken" the surface of the note.  Paper is clean and bright with original sheen.   Corners are not rounded.

EXTREMELY FINE: EF(XF)  A very attractive note, with light handling. May have a maximum of three light folds or one strong crease.  Paper is clean and bright with original sheen. Corners may show only the slightest evidence of rounding.  There may also be the slightest sign of wear where a fold meets the edge.

VERY FINE: VF  An attractive note, but with more evidence of handling and wear.  May have several folds both vertically and horizontally.  Paper may have minimal dirt, or possible colour smudging.  Paper itself is still relatively crisp and floppy.  There are no tears into the border area, although the edges do show slight wear.  Corners also show wear but not full rounding.

FINE: F  A note which shows considerable circulation, with many folds, creases and wrinkling.  Paper is not excessively dirty but may have some softness.  Edges may show much handling, with minor tears in the border area.  Tears may not extend into the design.  There will be no center hole because of excessive folding.  Colours are clear but not very bright.  A staple hole or two would not be considered unusual wear in a Fine F note.  Overall appearance is still on the desirable side.

VERY GOOD: VG  A well used note, abused but still intact.  Corners may have much wear and rounding, tiny nicks, tears may extend into the design, some discoloration may be present, staining may have occurred, and a small hole may sometimes be seen at center from excessive folding.  Staple holes and pinholes are usually present, and the note itself is quite limp but NO pieces of the note can be missing.  A note in VG condition may still have an overall not unattractive appearance.

GOOD: G  A well worn and heavily used note. Normal damage from prolonged circulation will include strong multiple folds and creases, stains, pinholes and/or staple holes, dirt, discoloration, edge tears, center hole, rounded corners and an overall unattractive appearance.  No large pieces of the note may be missing.  Graffiti is commonly seen on notes in G condition.

FAIR: FR  A totally limp, dirty and very well used note.  Larger pieces may be half torn off or missing besides the defects mentioned under the Good category.  Tears will be larger, obscured portions of the note will be bigger.

POOR: PR  A "rag" with severe damage because of wear, staining, pieces missing, graffiti, larger holes.  May have tape holding pieces of the note together.  Trimming may have taken place to remove rough edges.  A Poor note is desirable only as a "filler" or when such a note is the only one known of that particular issue.
