This is the story of a unique sporting odyssey that began in one of cricket's most unlikely locations and ended in glory at the Home of Cricket. The 'Road to Lord's' is what the players called it, a remarkable travelogue that took the Australian team to the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, then to Pakistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan again, back home for the Ashes, on to the Caribbean and then to England for the World Cup.
In this book Steve Waugh relives all the excitement of Australia's World Cup triumph. He describes the two astonishing 'must win' matches against South Africa - one a last-over victory, the other a stunning tie - in which he played such a pivotal role. He recalls the amazing comeback of Shane Warne, dropped in the West Indies, thinking of retirement early on in England, then man of the match in both the Cup semi-final and final. Steve remembers, too, the remarkable efforts, from Malaysia to Lord's, of men such as Glenn McGrath, Mark Waugh, Adam Gilchrist, Michael Bevan and Ricky Ponting, and Test heroes Ian Healy, Michael Slater and Stuart MacGill. He looks back on the riots during the one-dayers in the West Indies, swapping spectacular centuries with Brian Lara in the Test series, his election as Test captain following Australia's sixth straight Ashes triumph, and on Mark Taylor in Pakistan - matching The Don by scoring 334 in one Test innings.
This, Steve Waugh's sixth diary, seems to cover more ground than all his others combined. Such was the life of Australia's cricket captain and his men. Featuring many of Steve's own photographs alongside superb shots from the renowned Allsport photo library, plus all the scores and all the memories, it is a celebration of one of the most extraordinary and successful journeys in the history of Australian sport, and a wonderful souvenir for all those fans who braved the late nights to watch Australia bring the World Cup home.
This 255 page softcover is illustrated with colour and black and white photographs. The cover has some minor corner bumps and there is a very tiny patch of wear to one top corner of spine. It is otherwise in a very good, tight, clean condition inside and out. A wonderful read and a great collectible!
