NORMAN LINDSAY 1879-1969 'SERIOUS THINGS'' PLATE EIGHT These wonderful pen drawings demonstrate Lindsay's absolute mastery of the medium. Collections of Lindsay's Pen Drawings were published in 1918, 1931, 1968 and 1974. The drawings have never been reproduced in this large format since. Each of the 12 major drawings had an accompanying frontispiece with the title of the drawing, also large format. The choice of ink and paper gives these images an astonishing vibrancy and richness. The edition of 500 was published in Sydney by Arthur McQuitty in 1924. These prints have become very rare as much of the edition has now been lost. The large size of the folio made it difficult to store and most have suffered heavily from foxing, moisture stains and insect damage. This drawing is tipped onto a backing sheet. The frontispiece is printed directly onto laid paper.
Both prints are in excellent bright condition. The backing sheet onto which the plate is tipped has some foxing but that does not affect the image as it is printed on different paper. I have included 4 scans showing some of the detail in the plate. The two prints are being sold as a pair and will be an outstanding addition to any collection. They come with our Certificate of Authenticity which details their origin. FRONTISPIECE - Sheet size 41cms x 31cms PLATE THREE - Plate Size - 29.5cms x 24.5cms .COLLECTING NORMAN LINDSAY PRINTS
Lindsay created, selected and collated many images for publication in books and portfolios. In most cases, these are the only source of the images. Publication of these images reached their peak in the 1920s when Lindsay was involved with the Fanfrolico Press. The majority of the publications were limited editions, some as small as 60 copies, of which very few still remain. It is unusual to find these books in good condition, without foxing, insect or water damage. Many have missing plates which have been removed for framing. The rarity of many of the images has made them highly collectable and they continue to rise in value. It is interesting to note that Limited Edition Facsimile Etchings seem to be good investments even though they were produced after Lindsay's death and clearly without his involvement. However, I do not sell them, because they are not lifetime impressions. A number of sellers describe these as 'etchings' which they are not. They are photomechanically produced copies of etchings. COLLOTYPE Collotype is the most accurate and beautiful method of reproduction yet invented. It has the advantage that it can render continuous graduations of tone without the intervention of a screen. But the making and printing of collotype plates is skilled and expensive work and can easily go wrong. The surface is too delicate to produce more than two thousand impressions. For these reasons, collotype was used for luxury art publications and since World War II, has been largely abandoned for other lower print quality commercial processes
