NORTH ADELAIDE SKETCHBOOK
Hard to Find Out of Print Book by Paula Nagel Drawings by Jeanette McLeod
North Adelaide was planned by Colonel Light, South Australia's Surveyor-General. His design, clearly shows his background of cosmpolite, aesthe, and solider. Wellington Square was not only the nucleus for a neat rectangular pattern of streets, it was also designed to be used as a blockade point if Light's city should be invaded. The first settlers in North Adelaide were mainly lower class tradesmen with a strong religious background, and they built many churches, of which a number have unique features. During the 1870s and 1880s South Australia experienced a boom period and many of the substantial and well designed houses standing today date from that era. They were in strong contrast to the labourer's cottages built in terraces to a simple pattern, and put up by the rich to gain a rental return for a small initial outlay. In recent years such cotages have been bought for small sums by developers who renovated and sold them as fashionable town houses. They are part of the renaissance of North Adelaide which includes a dream which cost over three quarters of a million dollars to fulfil. It is among the stories of North Adelaide told by Paula Nagel in this book which is so delightfully illustrated by Jeanette McLeod.
