Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium from the food and drinks you consume. Calcium helps you develop and maintain healthy bones, muscles and teeth.
There are very small amounts of vitamin D in some foods. However, this is usually not enough to maintain the levels your body needs. Our body produces most of the vitamin D we need when direct sunlight hits our skin.
Many people get enough vitamin D through exposure to sunlight during normal day-to-day outdoor activities like walking around, shopping, gardening and so on. However, some people have very low levels of daily sun exposure.
If you don’t get enough vitamin D, you are more likely to get various musculoskeletal conditions including rickets (soft, weakened bones) in children and osteoporosis in older adults. Elderly people with a vitamin D deficiency are also more likely to fall (and break bones) because they have weaker muscles. They may also have balance problems.
People at increased risk of vitamin D deficiency include:
- Babies born to women with a vitamin D deficiency
- Children with little sunlight exposure
- Adults with little sunlight exposure
- People who cover most of their body
- People unable to regularly get out of their house
- People with dark skin
- People in residential care
- Frail older people
- Shift workers
- People with some medical conditions such as certain bowel diseases.
Some studies suggest that about eight out of 10 people in the above high-risk groups have some degree of vitamin D deficiency.
