This easy-to-grow, warm season annual plant is a native of southern Mexico, Central and northern South America. The common name Nasturtium, was given to the plant by early herbalists because it had a mustard oil similar to watercress (Nasturtium officinale). It can be grown as a perennial in USDA zones 9 to 11.
This cultivar is a dwarf growing to only 15 - 20cm (6 - 8in) high; with peltate (sheil shaped) deep green leaves; flowers are intensely coloured red, orange and bright yellow and have a funnel shaped nectar spur at the back of the flower.

Nasturtiums like well drained soil in full sun and will tolerate partial shade but will not bloom as well under those conditions. Dead-heading prolongs flowering and though they accept drought conditions again flowering suffers.

The flowers and leaves are edible and their slightly peppery taste becomes more intense if they are grown in full sun in a hot climate.

I created Ole Lantana's Seed Store after I retired for health reasons. Previously I had owned and operated a successful wholesale nursery in South East Queensland despite the continuing drought. My interest in plants goes back a long way to when I used to weed my grandfather's strawberry patch, I loved it - he didn't much care for it. Eventually, I went to the University of Queensland and completed formal horticultural studies and my nursery career was launched. Ole Lantana's Seed Store provides a continuing interest in Horticulture in my retirement.
