IN BEAUTY, WE RETURN is the first compilation album from R. Carlos Nakai, master of the Native American cedar flute. Culled from over two dozen solo albums, collaborations, and live recordings, this collection represents Nakai's entire musical career. His ethereal, haunting flute is blended into an unusual number of musical styles and genres, including jazz, fusion, and classical. Nakai's music is authentically Native American, yet his expression is completely original and personal. IN BEAUTY, WE RETURN includes three tracks from Nakai's performances with the Canyon Symphony Orchestra, including his classic "Whippoorwill," a hypnotic track that is made richer by the inclusion of strings and percussion. Listeners will have a chance to compare it against the stark, entrancing original, which is also included here. Even with his genre-jumping, Nakai keeps his sound soothing and minimal. He allows rhythm and intensity to create tension and interest, never resorting to bombast or jarring percussion. Nakai is a favorite among bodyworkers and is perfect for healing work, meditation, and setting a quiet, yet energized, mood.

The Best of Nakai:  In Beauty, We Return  Native American Flute Music CD

In 1983, R. Carlos Nakai introduced the haunting and soothing sound of the Native American flute to the world and began an exploration of the musical possibilities of this traditional instrument. This collection of songs draws from the best of Nakai's recordings and shows the range and versatility of his artistry and musical imagination.

Credited by many as being responsible for the current Renaissance of interest in Native American music, this traditional flutist released his first album, "Changes," in 1983 and has gone on to record scores of albums both traditional and contemporary.

Ever pushing the boundaries of genre and imagination, Nakai has sometimes played solo and at other times collaborated other artists ranging from guitarists and pianists to Japanese folk bands and symphony orchestras.

This compilation album is helpfully arranged into four sections, each containing three or four songs from a total of thirteen different albums. The sectional groupings are: "Solo" (traditional Native American-style pieces), "Quiet Collaborations" (meditative New Age style), "Rhythmic Collaborations" (light jazz) and "With Orchestra" (self-explanatory).
