Australian Blue Ginger
Alpinia coerulea (caerulea)
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
The most widespread of
the Australian Alpinia species, it is found on the east coast from the
Torres Strait Islands at the northernmost Queensland to Sydney, New
South Wales. It prefers a humus-rich, damp soil in a protected, shady
position. It dislikes both drought and frost.
An
evergreen perennial, clumping plant growing to a height of 2 metres
with a spread of 1 metre. The rhizome (underground stem) is creeping;
the stems are upright and straight; the leaves are bright green,
narrow, lanceolate and opposite, the flowers are white and red and in
terminal clusters appearing in spring; the fruit, for which it is
named, are blue, globular berries about 1cm across.
The
seeds of this plant were eaten by the Aborigines. The young tips are
tender and have a distinctive ginger flavour. They give a piquant
flavour to salads and are a tasty addition to mixed dried fruit.
Offered is a packet of 15 seeds with propagation notes.
All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
