This handmade rabbit was made by Mayan people in the village of San Juan Chamula, Chiapas, Mexico. San Juan Chamul is a lovely town just outside of Chiapas. Uniquely, they celebrate every day of the year! Everyday is a festival and a celebration.

The people of Chiapas have an interesting history and many of their art and crafts in village markets are used to raise money to support the Zapatista rebels. The Zapatista's stand forth for the elevation of farmers, agriculture and womens liberation - they are essentially a communist based group that is still strong in these parts of the world mainly because they are supported by the majority of the people. They are fighting for simple rights that should be granted to all people.

These toys are made from pure wool and hand stitched. These beautiful indigienous people create a range of unique toys representing cats, elephants, deer, frogs and more.

I love these toys, the indigenous people that made them, and what they stand for. These people have a unique community, a real co-existance with the environment and government that simply does not care. Most of all they have spirit and a will to retain their culture and way of life. If selling a few handmade toys at a local market is what they have to do to retain their way of life then I am more than willing to support it. Know that in purchasing this item it is authentic and the money goes back directly to the Mayan people of Chiapas, Mexico.

This item was purchased direct from the artisan by us while on our travels in Mexico. We wanted people to see the beautiful handmade creations this wonderful country brings.

We always pay full price for the pieces and do not bargain.

Shipping:

We are always happy to combine shipping costs on multiple items and to post internationally. Please contact us when you have completed your purchases to get your postage discount. All our items are shipped via Australia post usually with 24hrs of receiving payment. Where possible, all our items are shipping in recycled bubble wrap, post packs and envelopes. This saves you money on packaging charges and is great for the environment. Never do we skimp on packaging though. All items are packaged with the utmost care to ensure they arrive to you in good order.
