Marantz 2230
This is the One You Have Been Waiting For
Flawless Engraved Champagne (Gold) Colored Anodised Front Panel
Original Wood Case
One of the Very First Made
Electrically Perfect and Exceeds Specifications by 36%
Designed in the USA and manufactured in Japan.
Electrically perfect. Burned in and the amplifier tested/verified to meet original specifications or better. (See photo) Exceeded power specifications by 36%.
Controls cleaned where appropriate, lamps replaced (see below), bias adjusted, power transistors removed and new greaseless insulators installed to help guarantee years of TROUBLE-FREE operation. Unit now works probably better than when new.
Burned in for over 48 hours. Tested under normal operating conditions at both high and low power levels. All inputs used (PHONO, AUX, TAPE, etc) and their proper operation verified.
This is a really beautiful receiver. I almost kept it - but I'm not a collector. I just like fixing them up for others to enjoy.
Includes the "Universal Voltage Block." That means this receiver can be used anywhere in the world. Marantz stopped including it on the later models.
The engraved panel is absolutely stunning. Superbly detailed and beautifully executed (See the photo). Marantz only produced about five thousand of these. They then switched to the less expensive, most common, silk screened silver panels.
All these steps help to guarantee years of TROUBLE-FREE operation. Unit now works probably better than when new.
I am an audio tech with over 30 years experience. I specialize in vintage equipment. Now that I’m retired, I can pick and choose what to refurbish. I have put a lot of time into this unit.
Guaranteed to meet all original specs and to be electrically/electronically perfect.
Did I say that it is a gorgeous receiver?
----CHECK THIS OUT----
I have replaced all of the indicator, two stereo lamps and all Panel and Meter Fuse Lamps with solid state equivelents. These lamps are a big hassle to replace. Some must be unsoldered and then resoldered - all of this after you've spent time removing all the pieces parts just to get at them. The replacements will NEVER burn out and you will NEVER need to suffer through the pain of replacing these bulbs
THE FRONT PANEL DISPLAY IS NOTHING SHORT OF SPECTACULAR - all because of the updated lamps.
Main power output and regulator transistors have been removed and remounted using more reliable greaseless insulators. That means you will never need to worry about old heat sink grease eventually drying out and causing a catastrophic failure.
Offset and bias adjusted to factory specs.
FM realigned. Both seperation and sensitivity are excellent.
Main power bridge rectifier removed and new heat sink compound applied. Secondary power supply adjusted for specified output. Many people ignore this critical step. If these fail – nothing works – they are the heart of the 2230.
The knobs and buttons have all been ultrasonically cleaned. That means they look as close to new as possible. They do show a little age - some very minor wear.
Receiver is virtually silent when no input is present.
Quiet operation and no apparent scratchiness.
Frankly, I don't think you will ever find a better one.
The Receiver
Classic "Blue-Face" black-out tuning dial. Back-lit, blue, analog FM/AM tuning VU meter.
Marantz seems to have gotton everything right when introducing the 22XX series of receivers in the early 1970's.
This Marantz 2230 is one of their first.
Marantz offered a set of unusual features (along with the expected) that were designed to appeal to the serious audiophile. It seems expense was not a consideration. Only the best parts and materials were used.
Features:
- Weighted, "Gyro-Touch", flywheel tuning.
- Back-lit, blue, analog tuning dial complemented by a white illuminated transparent tuning pointer (See photos).
- Back-lit blue FM/AM meter
- FM hybrid circuit is based, in part, on one of the very earliest consumer ICs the TA7060P. It is one of the main reasons this tuner sounds so good.
- Sensitive AM circuit. Remember, AM was the dominant form of broadcasting in that day so it was important that the AM section worked well. This AM section puts modern receivers to shame.
- Separate de-tented Bass Mid and Treble controls. A feature intended to attract the audiophiles.
- Seperate speaker selector push buttons – “Off” (great for headphone use), “Main”, “Remote”, “Both On”
- Variable FM Muting Control. Designed to appeal to the audiophile.
- Built in Antenna Attenuator Switch. Marantz was serious about their radio tuners!
- Loudness control (for better fidelity at low listening levels)
- High filter
- Low Filter
- Tape Monitor
- Stereo/Mono selector
- Aux Input
- Phono Input
- Separate preamp out and main amp inputs
- External AM and FM antenna connections
- Built-in AM stick antenna
- Front Panel ¼” Headphone output jack.
- Two Front Panel I/O ¼” dubbing jacks.
- Chassis ground terminal
- One switched and one unswitched AC outlets
- Stereo/Mono Selector
- FM muting In/Out
- Quadrial output jack
- Fused AC line.
The receiver’s amplifier is rated at 30 Watts RMS per channel, both channels driven into an 8 Ohm load.
I completely refurbished and tested the amplifier – it easily exceeded published specifications (see Photo).
=========================
As usual, this item is sold "AS-Is" due to its' age. I have honestly tried to describe it as accurately as possible and there is no reason to believe that it will not serve well for another thirty years. However, items of this age are unpredictable.
Thanks for looking.
