*Mezzotint is essentially a tone process in which a metal plate is roughened or ground all over using a tool with a curved and serrated edge, the 'rocker', producing an overall burr which would print a deep velvety black. The artist scrapes back the burr in proportion to the lightness of the tone required. The main distinguishing feature of the process is that the artist works from dark to light-from a black ground to the highlights, not from a white ground to the black lines or shadows. Mezzotint is known for its rich soft darks, soft lights and its capacity to convey a complete range of tones.
Laurent Schkolnyk studied printmaking at the L'Ecole des Beaux Arts de Nantes in France. Later he became a student at the studio of Professor Guimezanes, who instructed him in the art and technique of Mezzotints. Since 1978 he has exhibited extensively in Europe, North America and Asia. Schkolnyk is regarded as one of the world's leading exponents of Mezzotint along with Avati, Watanabe, Hwang, Hamanishi and Wako Ito. His work is in many institutions, including the National Library of France, Los Angeles County Museum and the San Francisco Fine Arts Museum.
