A Radio 4 dramatization, first broadcast in 1984, of Dickens's last completed novel. Conveying the murky grimness of Victorian London and the dankness of Thames-side low life, it is a satire on wealth and its corrupting power, symbolized by the inheritance of a dust-heap.

Such a dense story but the radio adaptation is tight and pacey and the production effects are excellent. Good characterful voices (some famous actors in this production), the Dollmaker, Jenny Wren is wonderful as are Wegg, Venus, Twemlow and the Boffins, but they are just the standouts, it is an well-cast and performed production.

Michael Kitchen heads a star cast which also features Simon Cadell as the narrator in this brilliant nine hour Radio 4 dramatisation.
