Obi Bag - Made from a Vintage Japanese Kimono Obi Sash/Belt

OBI BAG MADE FROM A VINTAGE OR ANTIQUE  JAPANESE KIMONO OBI SASH/BELT

ITEM

OBI BAG - A unique fashion accessory for both day and evening use.

I have sold hundreds of these bags and they are loved by people of all ages from teenagers to grannies.

The bags are a great size and will easily take a full wallet, coin purse, 2 pairs of glasses, bulky sets of keys, makeup, mobile phone and much more...

This bag is a "Graggie Original" and has been handmade by me in the State of Queensland, Australia.

STYLE

Shoulder Tote - fully lined and quilted.

Handle strap is long enough to be worn across the body or over the shoulder, but if tied is short enough for bag to be used as a handbag.

SIZE 13"(33cm) High x 12"(30cm) Wide x 3"(8cm)Rectangular Base with a 20"(51cm) Handle drop.
FABRIC

Obi fabric is a heavy brocade-like fabric.  The design is usually woven and is often also embroidered.

This fabric is a silk and synthetic blend with metallic threads, from an  used vintage Japanese Kimono Fukuro Obi Sash/Belt that is in good condition. Only one side is patterned.  The back of the bag is plain black coloured fabric from the same obi.

The lining is red quilters lame and has a large pocket(s) topped with a decorative machine embroidered border.

(For information on Obi types, please see below).

FABRIC COLOUR & DESIGN

The design is gold peonies and chrysanthemums on wheels.

The base colour is black that has been embroidered and woven in different shades and textures of metallic gold, persimmon red in 2 shades, and white.

The reverse side of the bag is plain black and devoid of decoration. The dry cleaners in Japan have pressed a crease in the fabric on the back of the bag, but I think this will ease with time and use.

Fully lined with red quilters lame.

Pocket(s) topped with decorative machine embroidered border.

HANDLE

The handle is made from the same obi and has been quilted for comfort and strength.

Handles is long enough to fit over the shoulder and across the body, yet when tied, is short enough to allow the bag to be used as a handbag.

FEATURES
  • Magnetic clasps for closure
  • 2 inner pockets
  • Fully lined (red).
  • Fully quilted
  • Unique

DISCLAIMER

Please choose carefully.  Although I do my very best to accurately describe my items, the colour on your monitor may be different from the actual colour of the item.  The fabric used to construct your item is from a used or unused vintage or antique garment, and is unlikely to be perfect.

If you have any questions regarding this item, please email me.

To view other obi bags, visit my eBay shop, 'Virtually Vintage Graggie', find the store inventory list on left hand side, and click on "Japanese Obi Bags"

Although I may make several bags from the same obi, each bag is uniquely different.  Therefore, this bag is a "one of" or "original".  Bag comes with a card and sealed in a cellophane bag.

Bag weighs 250 grams.

CARE:  Obi silks should be dry cleaned only as colours may run if washed.

NOTE:  I will be listing other Obi bags and items made from vintage Japanese fabrics from time to time.  The prices will vary hugely and are based on the original cost of the obi/kimono fabric in addition to my cost for the materials used to construct the item.  Some of the gorgeous fabrics and obi's are rarer and more costly than others, and articles made from these will of course be listed at a higher price.  My listed auction prices do not include my time and labour. AND don't forget, vintage obi's won't be available forever.  Many represent a little piece of Japanese heritage and culture - the history and customs of a bygone era.  They are luxuriously rich, exclusive, rare, and are something to be valued and treasured.

WHAT IS AN OBI?  Answer:  obi are the top-most sash worn with various styles of Japanese clothing.  Obi are worn with different types of kimono (robe) and function both to keep the robe closed and in place on the body, and as decoration.  Obi are traditionally made of silk.  Obi are worn by both men and women.  Women's kimono obi are twice as wide as men's and are considerably longer.  Most obi have a highly decorated "front" side and are often plain on the reverse.  Some obi have the same woven pattern on both sides and these.  They are usually very decorative and colourful.

MARU OBI:  Oldest style of obi that is patterned on both sides.  This variety of obi is the most formal and expensive. Because of its heavy weight, the Maru obi is now usually only worn at formal occasions such as weddings.

FUKURO OBI: Less formal and lighter than the Maru obi and usually only 60% patterned on one side, the Fukuro obi first began being worn in the late 1920's.

NAGOYA OBI:  This obi is a more casual and more easily worn than the Maru and Fukuro obi because it has a long 1/2 width end to make it more comfortable.  Often the only patterned part is the short, wide end.  Nagoya Obi first began being worn after 1926.

HAN HABA OBI: Are the narrower obi usually worn with more casual garments.

More Japanese fabrics and items made from Japanese fabrics are listed for sale in my store, VIRTUALLY VINTAGE GRAGGIE.  Stock is constantly changing, so add me to your favourites and drop in from time to time.
