Milestones in Underwater Photography

In the 1960s photographer Bates Littlehales, with the help of marine biologist Walter Starck, designed ‘OceanEye’, a Plexiglas bubble-encased housing, to allow photographers As a staff photographer for the National Geographic Society for 37 years, Bates Littlehales covered a wide range of assignments around the world. He is considered one of the pioneers of underwater photography and designed the ‘OceanEye’ housing for the Nikon F and all of its interchangeable lenses. To use Nikon cameras underwater.

Pressure-proof camera designs

As we go deeper underwater the weight of

water above us exerts pressure on the camera which can either force water past moisture seals or crush the camera/housing.

The solution is to design the camera (or the housing) so that it can withstand the pressures which can be expected and still be able to operate

the main controls. Most underwater cameras and housings are waterproof and pressure-proof to 50metres which is commonly regarded as the safe

maximum depth for sport diving. At this depth the water is exerting a pressure of 6BAR or about 88lbs per square inch! The Oceaneye is one such housing that will not disappoint as it is designed to go beyond the normal recreational diving limits. Unlike plastic housing it is unlikely to crack. In generally good condition but I would recommend rechecking the seals just in case. I have not used it for a least 8 or so years. Various adapters, adapter gears for different lenses come with it including a solid aluminum carry case.
