Well proportioned
and beautifully ornamented, this old spirit house is created by master
craftsmen in the temple 'vihaan' style. The spirit house features raised
floral motifs and an array of coloured mirrors that fit neatly into the roof
and walls in keeping with tradition. 'Chofa' finials grace the ridge
ends and abstracted nagas finish the gable ends. The rear outer wall is also
nicely decorated. This spirit house is larger and of better finish than most
wooden spirit houses found in Please Google sabai

houses demonstrate the unique blend of animism, Hinduism and Buddhism that
exists in Thai culture. Thai spirit houses are diminutive residences for the
spirits of the land (‘phra phum’). Normally a spiritual ‘specialist’
will be called in to determine the most auspicious place on a property to place
the spirit house, almost always outside the shadow of the main house or
building. Nowadays they are often made of cement, often
in garish colours, but there remain skilled craftsmen who create them using
wood. Daily offerings are made to the inhabitants of the spirit house with the
intention of placating them, and keeping them from creating mischief as well as
inviting good luck for the human inhabitants of the property. Offerings may
include comprise flowers, fruit, incense, betel, tobacco, candles as well as
soft drink and even whisky or rum. One may also see little figurines in and
around the spirit house called jao tii’, or Lord of the Land,
represented by an old man and woman accompanied by angels, dancing girls,
horses, elephants etc. Occasionally one will see a Hindu deity such as
Lord Brahma or Ganesh. Spirit house appear not just on individual’s
properties but near very old, established trees, on the roadside or on the
outskirts of a village, creating a special home for spirits. Sometimes special
rituals are held here to placate the spirits and ward of misfortune and attract
positive forces. Spirit houses play an important role in Thai culture and are
considered imperative to maintain an atmosphere of calm and balance in daily
life. . Visit our to see more exotic items Reduced postage offered for combined items _____________________________________________________________ Postage Costs (registered airmail)
