On-Semi MC100EL33 ÷4 Frequency Divider DC..4GHz 5V ECL (Qty.4)

On offer are 4 new (old stock) pieces of the MC100EL33 4GHz frequency divider by On-Semi (formerly Motorola).

If you want to measure or control frequencies beyond 50..100MHz, you'll need to use more specialist circuitry than the regular 74' series counters and flipflops. These ECL dividers are an example, a dual flipflop capable of toggling at microwave frequencies.

• max toggle, 4.2GHz typical, 3.8GHz guaranteed.
• 1pS jitter
• rise/fall times ~220pS
• prop delay 700pS
• diff/single-ended/AC coupled input configurations
• temperature compensation
• 8 pin SOIC - easily hand soldered

These would complement many other prescalers (with inputs to around 1GHz) quadrupling their range.

Recently (Oct 2006) Silicon Chip magazine published a prescaler project by Jim Rowe which uses a similar configuration (with non-temp-comp 10K series brother, the MC10EL33 and an ERA-2SM).

".. first and most critical frequency divider and it's an MC10EL33 device from On-Semiconductor. This is an ECL divide-by-4 device with very impressive specifications. It can operate at input frequencies up to at least 3.8GHz and has a propagation delay of less than 800pS (picoseconds!). It even includes its own bias voltage source, (Vbb, pin 4) which is used to provide the correct bias for its two inputs (via the 2.2k resistors). It has complementary outputs, pins 7 & 6) which both need to be tied to ECL low logic level via termination resistors of close to 50 ohm. Here we use 56 Ohm resistors because this value is more readily available than 51 ohm."

Of course, there are many other applications beside frequency meters, such as synthesizers and clock generators. A chance here to pick up a few to play with ...
