If you have been a loyal Microsoft Office purchaser for many years, then finally asked yourself "WHY??", please know that you are not alone, and that there is a way out. Many of us have been spending top dollar on this product since getting a computer, mostly because we thought there was no other choice, not because we thought it was actually worth it. My first purchase was Word 6 on floppy in 1995, and it alone cost me $335 - and that was cheap at the time! If you're sick of paying literally hundreds of dollars each time - and I mean each time, because we generally pay for an upgrade or three to iron out bugs or just to keep it up to date - then it's time for you to join the migration to OpenOffice.org - the Open Source Office Suite!

Also, you may have heard of the Windows phenomenon of "bloatware" (which also affects the Mac), where programs are getting bigger and slower to load without any apparent reason. Have a look at the "system requirements" of each version of MS Office and you'll see what I mean. OpenOffice.org will not only take up less space than MS Office does, but also load much faster. This means if you have an older computer, you'll definitely be able to run OpenOffice.org more smoothly than the latest MS Office. If you don't particularly want to upgrade your hardware just so you can run a word processor and spreadsheet
that is still supported by the company you bought it from, the time for the switch is now.

If you do a Google search you'll see it's not just those in Linux using OpenOffice.org (or OOo for short). Ever since the Windows version came out, more and more have been flocking to it and swearing never to pay huge amounts for office software again. Since OOo has an updater that automatically informs you of new versions, you can keep your suite up to date by downloading the upgrade immediately (or you can just wait for a major update and do it then).

One other feature of OOo that can't be overlooked is the default support for saving files in the PDF format (in all programs except Base). If you forked out even more hundreds for Adobe Acrobat, only to have it crash Word or otherwise not behave as it should (especially considering how much it cost!), you will be amazed. As soon as you install OOo and open the programs, you'll notice they have a red button marked "PDF" in the toolbar. Click it and the current file is saved as a .pdf document!

As you can see, OpenOffice.org really is a godsend for those sick of the usual alternative, and for those looking for a cheaper and more reliable way to create .pdf documents. And since it doesn't cost a fortune, it is worth giving it a try today. Please note that OpenOffice.org, like all open source software, is free to download; what you are paying for here is to have a copy of the installer on a CD, to save you searching for and downloading it. Also, you get documentation and extras, and included on the discs are multi-platform versions of 3 of the best and most popular graphics programs for Linux:

The GIMP image editor (supports most image types, including Photoshop .psd files)

Inkscape vector illustrator (will open those .svg files Windows programs won't)

Blender 3D modeller (to create logos and cool 3D wallpapers)

Not just that, but you also get a large selection of OOo Extensions, including Templates, Import/Export Filters, and various other Add-ons that greatly enhance this office suite.
