The “Picturesque Atlas of Australasia” (published Sydney 1886-88) was amongst a number of books and periodicals combining history and illustrations published to celebrate the first centenary of Cook’s landing of 1770 and the first European settlement of Australia and New Zealand. Its emphasis was mostly concerned with the cities and towns, life in the country and the growth of  Australia and New Zealand.
Based on American examples, artists and engravers from the USA were brought to Australia to supervise production of the “Picturesque Atlas”. Illustrations were both full page and within the text and included steel and wood engravings and lithographs. The engravers and lithographers of these reproductive prints considered their work art; the artwork was completed specifically for that medium - the illustrated book/magazine.
Today engravings from the “Picturesque Atlas” remain one of the few sources of images of life and work in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands in the 19th century. Traditionally, in the English manner, they are sometimes handcoloured later. Some collectors prefer them in their original black and white state. Either way, the engravings have great appeal to collectors and decorators alike.We have been dealing in antique Australian engravings for many years.
