Original lithographic print of "Rock Face" by Stapleford, printed as an Artist Proof, on high quality art paper, in 1988. This originally belonged to the artist, and has the title, artist name, year, and "A/P" (Artist Proof), all written in pencil, below the image.  

Beautifully detailed, the artist executes some wonderful textures, in his portrayal of two Aboriginal Elders, posing in front of an ancient rock face, which exhibits ancient Aboriginal rock drawings of animals and men, killing and eating one another. The colours are mainly a grey to reddish-brown colour, with black lines used for the X-ray drawings, and more subtle shading and toning, for the Elders. There are also quite bold and violent-looking lines of blood, that certainly evoke the flow of blood from the kangaroo, after it has been speared, pierced or clubbed, with blood splatter coming from its throat/ neck area, as well as leaving a long downward trail. Left of the kangaroo, a giant lizard is eating a small human being, while a large human being watches, who appears to be surrounded by, and covered in blood. It is quite possible that he is watching the sacrifice of another being to a god. Before these ancient images, painted on rock, the two elders stand, allowing their faces to be captured by an artist, for all eternity. A very haunting, and highly evocative artwork.
