DESCRIPTION

The process behind my work is as much my art as the paintings and prints themselves. These works are collaborative efforts between myself and a number of outside agents including friends, students, my children, and even a robot that I designed to paint with an artists brush on canvas.

When working with my students or my children, I let them start the work and define its direction. Then when the time feels right, not sure how I know when, I take over and finish the artwork.

When working with my robot, I let it make most of the preliminary aesthetic decisions. However, since it makes art based on an array of neural net algorithms that I wrote, some would argue that my code was the creative agent. Details of the exact process and all the decisions that the robot is making autonomously can be seen at www.zanelle.com. You can decide how much is human and how much is artificial creativity.

Part of my exploration of the collaborative process is to dispell the premium that many people put on originality and human creativity. What it comes down to is that I like to make paintings and prints. I like to make lots of art and enjoy working on it with others.
